I recently moved back to my native Idaho from a stint in Washington, D.C., which began its smokefree policy while I was living there. The difference that I experienced in D.C. was tremendous, and I'm excited to see the same changes taking place back here at home. I remember noticing the difference immediately - it is so much easier to go out and have some fun knowing that you will still be able to breathe for the next several days thereafter.
Because I am an avid runner, outdoorsman, and general athlete, healthy lungs are a vital part of so much that I enjoy in life. The idea is very attractive that I will be able to have a happy hour, attend a concert, or otherwise generally experience the great social scene in Boise without suffering the negative consequences of inhaling detrimental amounts of smoke. After all, one of the things that drew me back to Idaho was the chance of a healthier and cleaner lifestyle.
As a student and practicing professional in the legal field, I recognize that it is not our government's place to legislate morality. However, even our most fundamental rights as Americans, such as our freedom of speech, may be restricted in time, place, and manner in order to facilitate the common good and preserve the health and safety of all people. The Smokefree Boise movement will help to ensure that the people who choose not to smoke will be able to equally enjoy and participate in all that Boise has to offer, without suffering the harmful health effects of second-hand smoke. Let's make this happen!
